Oprah Winfrey is one of the most well-known and beloved influencers with more than 19 million followers on Instagram, but that didn’t stop Winfrey from becoming part of a failed marketing campaign. Many people suggest that this campaign fail is among the worst social media posts.
In an attempt to promote Microsoft Surface, the company’s latest laptop, they joined hands with Winfrey. Winfrey’s mistake led to Microsoft taking a big hit after everyone thought the social media campaign would be a massive success.
After Winfrey endorsed the new laptop from Microsoft, it’s clear and obvious that she posted the marketing campaign from an Apple iPad(Microsoft competitor) on Twitter.
What can Winfrey and Microsoft learn from this failed campaign attempt?
Microsoft hitted the homerun when collaborating with Winfrey, but the campaign strategy did not prove to be successful due to an unknowingly mistake that promoted Apple.
Microsoft needs to be more careful when selecting to work with an influencer who’s very outspoken and doesn’t think twice before posting, making sure their product is being endorsed and not the competitor’s product.
Oprah on the other hand needs to make sure she’s promoting the right product after collaborating with a certain company, and not endorsing a company that’s a competitor with the company she joined hands with.
This is a prime example that proves, no matter how big or popular an influencer is, results are never guaranteed and it’s proven that a lot of marketing campaigns fail due to big names.
