One of the most heated and explosive influencer fights in 2019 was between beauty influencers James Charles and Tati Westbrook. Westbrook called out Charles for his alleged inappropriate behaviour after ending her friendship with Charles publicly.
After a year of complete silence about the feud a 40-minute YouTube video was posted by Westbrook on June 30 titled “Breaking My Silence” in which she apologized to Charles for starting the feud and accused Jeffree Star and Shane Dawson for manipulating her into lashing out at Charles.
In Westbrook’s “Breaking My Silence” video she said, “For over a year now, everytime this scandal is revisited either in the mainstream media or through social platforms, I became the number-one target of relentless hate while remaining voiceless.”
Westbrook also said, “I’ve lost over a year of my life terrified of social media and terrified of speaking out against the people that used, coerced and manipulated me into uploading my video of May last year.
The starting point of the feud
The feud started in May 2019 when Westbrook uploaded a video on YouTube titled “Bye Sister” in which she ended her friendship with Charles publicly after he promoted products of SugarBearHair, a fierce competitor to Westbrook’s Halo Baby. Charles was seen promoting the products at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
Westbrook also accused Charles of bullying and sexual harassment while back-and-forth videos was posted during the heated feud, and influencers like Gabriel Zamora, Nikita Dragun and Jeffree Star joined the feud with their own videos.
Westbrook stated in her “Breaking My Silence” video that she started the feud because of the “heinous lies that were fed to me by Shane Dawson and Jeffree Star,” lies which include allegations of Charles abusing and harassing minors.
She claimed that the pair had said that they have evidence surrounding the allegations and that victims would come forward after she posts the video, which in the end never happened.
Trying to ruin Charels’ career
In her YouTube video she stated that she realized Star and Dawson lied to her to ruin Charles’ career right as their docuseries aired and the release of their Conspiracy Collection under Jeffree Star Cosmetics.
Westbrook stated at the end of her video that she is working closely with her lawyers to uncover evidence of Star and Dawson’s involvement with the feud and is threatening them with a civil lawsuit for recovery of damages.
Star uploaded a video on July 18 in response to Westbrook, refuting allegations that he blackmailed or manipulated herm
Star said, “I didn’t try to take anyone down. I’m not a villain in a movie. This isn’t a Netflix series with a crazy storyline – I know it sounds like it, but trust me I’m sure I’d watch it as well – but this is real life and a lot of things that are happening and being said are false. When someone tries to take someone else down or their career and it doesn’t work, you can’t just take a few more down with you. That’s not how life works. We have to all take accountability for our own actions and no one else’s and that’s what I will continue to do.”
Star took time in his video apologizing to Charles and explaining that he should’ve handled the drama better, like reaching out to Charles about the allegations to clarify them rather than speaking publicly without any concrete proof.
Star also said that his lawyers are working behind the scenes on the issue at hand, referring to the lawsuit Westbrooo wants to file against him.
